The following information is about Atherosclerosis.
Atherosclerosis Defined
Hardening of the arteries; a condition characterized by the buildup of plaque and other substances in the inner lining of the blood vessels. When plaque builds up in an artery of the heart, the artery becomes narrowed, reducing the blood flow. This can lead to angina or a heart attack. In the arteries of the neck or brain, it can lead to a stroke.

Unique Immune Functions Discovered In Arteries From Distinct Regions Of The Body
Published September 5, 2008, 5:15 am, Medical News Today
Human arteries play distinct roles in the immune system depending on their anatomical location, researchers at Emory University School of Medicine have discovered. Their findings explain why vascular diseases affect different parts of the arterial network and could help doctors fine-tune the treatment of such diseases as atherosclerosis and vasculitis.

Ten million Americans have peripheral arterial disease (PAD), and research shows that the highest risk populations include African-Americans (twice as likely to develop clogged leg arteries), seniors (12-20 percent develop PAD) and diabetics (one in three who are over the age of 50 develop PAD).
GSK's darapladib modifies coronary plaque composition and lowers Lp-PLA2 activity: Study
Published September 5, 2008, 2:39 am, PharmaBiz
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) announced that results of the Integrated Biomarkers and Imaging Study-2 (IBIS-2) showed that use of the selective Lp-PLA2 (lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2) inhibitor, darapladib, in addition to standard of care treatment, prevented expansion of the necrotic core, a region within coronary plaque associated with a high risk of rupture.

Myocardial Regeneration By Intracoronary Infusion Of Selected Population Of Stem Cells In AM
Published September 4, 2008, 6:09 am, Medical News Today
REGENT is a multicenter, randomized trial for comparison of intracoronary infusion of bone marrow-derived unselected mononuclear cells (MNC) and selected CD34+CXCR4+ cells in 200 patients with acute myocardial infarction and reduced LVEF ≤ 40%. Primary end-point was change of LV ejection fraction (LVEF) and volumes measured by MRI before and 6 months after the procedure.
New Method For Early Detection Of A Heart Attack
Published September 4, 2008, 5:10 am, Medical News Today

- Atherosclerosi s diagnostic imaging by optical spectroscopy and optical coherence tomography: Atherosclerosi s is traditionally viewed as a disease of uncontrolled plaque growth leading to arterial occlusion. More recently, however, occlusion of the arterial lumen is being viewed as an acute event triggered by plaque rupture and thrombosis. An atheromatous plaque becomes vulnerable to sudden activation and/or rupture when a constellation of processes are activated by various trigger mechanisms. There is growing evidence that the vulnerability (i.e. susceptibility to rupture) and thrombo...
