Atherosclerosis Defined

Hardening of the arteries; a condition characterized by the buildup of plaque and other substances in the inner lining of the blood vessels. When plaque builds up in an artery of the heart, the artery becomes narrowed, reducing the blood flow. This can lead to angina or a heart attack. In the arteries of the neck or brain, it can lead to a stroke.

GSK's darapladib modifies coronary plaque composition and lowers Lp-PLA2 activity: Study

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) announced that results of the Integrated Biomarkers and Imaging Study-2 (IBIS-2) showed that use of the selective Lp-PLA2 (lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2) inhibitor, darapladib, in addition to standard of care treatment, prevented expansion of the necrotic core, a region within coronary plaque associated with a high risk of rupture.

REGENT is a multicenter, randomized trial for comparison of intracoronary infusion of bone marrow-derived unselected mononuclear cells (MNC) and selected CD34+CXCR4+ cells in 200 patients with acute myocardial infarction and reduced LVEF ≤ 40%.
