The following information is about Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) Surgery.

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) Surgery Defined

A surgery performed to bypass narrowed or obstructed areas in the coronary arteries (the blood vessels which supply oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the heart) to improve blood flow to muscle cells. Cardiopulmonary bypass is necessary for most cardiac surgical procedures. During the bypass, a machine takes over the function of the heart and lungs, so the surgeon can repair the heart while it is resting. An incision is made in the center of the chest, and the bypass is done with a vein from a leg or an artery from the chest or arm. After surgery, the blood flows around the blocked coronary arteries, and blood and oxygen are restored to the heart muscle. (Read more)
