Heart Failure Defined

A condition which occurs when the heart's pumping power is less than normal. The weakened heart cannot pump enough blood to meet all of the body's need for oxygen and nutrients. The condition also creates more difficulty for other organs to carry away excess fluids and waste. Heart failure is a chronic condition which, for most patients, can be treated and managed, but not cured.

Study: Almost 4 percent of pig valves fail

Four out of 106 heart replacement valves from pig hearts failed, U.S. researchers found. The report, published in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, said the pig valves failed after three, 14, 19 and 44 months, respectively.
