The following information is about Valve Replacement Surgery.
Valve Replacement Surgery Defined
A surgery used to repair or replace a damaged or weakened heart valve, either with a tissue or mechanical replacement. When healthy, the heart's four valves act like one-way doors, controlling and regulating the flow of blood. (See How the Heart Works: Heart Valves.) But heart valves can be damaged or scarred by cardiac injury, birth defects, rheumatic fever or infection. Or they may narrow (stenosis) or leak, causing blood to back up (regurgitation). When this occurs, the valves may no longer open or close properly, forcing the heart to pump harder to get blood to the body. This condition can weaken the heart and cause pain, shortness of breath or dizziness. If medication alone isn't enough to solve the problem, surgery may be needed. (Read more)
